South Molton Struggle 2011

Unusually hot conditions in October did not stop 2 records being broken at the 3rd South Molton Struggle on the 2nd October 2011. Chris Sellens of Bideford AAC beat the course record in an unbelievable time of 46.16 and his team mate Sarah Ivory took the womans record in 54.08. Quite an acheivement considering the terrain and the weather.

Our very own Dave Cutler took 2nd place in a fast time of 49.38 which also gave him the first local man accolade, winning the Catherine Hulme Memorial Trophy. The first female struggler to finish was Tracey Hulland in a time of 1.04.46 which was her first outing over the course, having previously managed the finish are in 2009 and 2010. Richard Westcott won the vet 65 age category and Tracey also collected 2nd in her age group.

A strong field of Strugglers took part and those that weren't running kindly helped with marshalling and organisation. Many marshalls also came from the local community and huge thanks go to all those that gave up their time to ensure this event continues to be a successful date on the North Devon Race calendar. Many runners have since commented how good our marshalls are - providing support and encouragement! Also important to mention are kind residents in Gunswell Lane who, when seeing how hot the conditions were, came out with buckets of water to help cool and hydrate the runners.

Well done to all those that took part and to everyone else for helping out - in particular - South Molton Rugby Club, Tim Dennis, Simon Drew and all our sponsors!
